CHENNAI: The CBCID on Friday arrested six transgenders (aravanis)
for abducting a Kovalam (Kancheepuram) teenager and forcing him
into prostitution in Pune after making him undergo sex change
surgery.
P Raju (name changed), 16, had escaped from Pune and
approached Jebaraj, who runs an NGO at Arumbakkam, on Wednesday.
Raju was taken to R M Ramathal, chairperson, Tamil Nadu State
Commission for Women and a complaint was lodged with the CBCID.
Raju, who belongs to poor family, had moved to his
grandmother’s house at Shenai Nagar and studied till 9th standard
at a corporation school in Kilapuk. As he couldn’t get support
for his education, he went back to his native place in Kolam,
where he got in touch with a transgender priest, Arasu alais
Arasi. She indulged him in homosexuality.
When his parents came to know of it, they prevented him from
meeting Arasi.
However, within a few days, Arasi brought him to Chennai and
handed him over to another transgender, Radha alias Raja of
Kallarai, and two other transgenders.
Raju was detained at a place near Central Prison. Later,
Raju was taken to Pune and forced to beg.
Eight months later, Raju was forced to undergo sex change
surgery in Kaddapa, Andhra Pradesh, police said. Raju was 15
years old at the time. After a ’special pooja’, the transgenders
forced Raju into prostitution. He attempted to escape twice, but
failed. Later, he saved some money and arrived in Chennai,
police added.
A CBCID produced the six arrested transgenders — Radha
alais Raja (52), Subu alais Subakaran (26) of Kamarajar Salai,
Arasu alais Arasi (25) of Kovalam, Shanthi (32) of Medavakkam,
Kuttiamma (31) of Palakarai, Trichi and Jothi alais Sekar (42) of
Kallarai — in Egmore Court. They were remanded in judicial
custody. The CBCID is looking for seven more accused in the
case.

CHENNAI: When 16-year-old Vinoth, a class 9 dropout, disappeared
from his house in Kovalam in 2006, his parents searched long and
hard, in vain.
In March 2009, he surfaced as Trisha,’ a transgender. His
parents Nagooran, a daily labourer, and Rani then approached two
NGOs and through them the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women.
Their petition was then forwarded to the police and special teams
were formed.
On Friday, five persons, including three transgenders, were
arrested for kidnapping Vinoth, castrating him and forcing him
into sex trade. The five S Arasu alias Arasi (25) of Kovalam, S
Subbu alias Subakaran of Annai Sathya Nagar in Kasimedu and
transgenders D Radha alias Raja (52), S Shanthi (32) of Kellys
and S Kuttima (31) of Kallarai were later remanded in judicial
custody.
“When he turned up at our house on March 11, my mother was
shocked to see Vinoth wearing women’s clothes, lipstick and
nail-polish. He did not utter a word for a whole day,” Rani said
in her petition.
According to the police, Vinoth, after dropping out of
school, went back to his parents in Kovalam but didn’t want to be
a burden on them. He approached soothsayer Arasu, said to be an
MSM (men who have sex with men). The latter allegedly had sex
with him. Vinoth left his house on July 18, 2006.
The petition said Arasu took Vinoth to Kasimedu and left him
at Subbu alias Suba’s house. A day later, Vinoth was taken to
transgender Radha’s house near the old central prison. Radha
confined him there for more than a month and forced him to wear
women’s clothes. “Radha promised my son a job in Pune and sold
him to another transgender Angalamma. Later, my son was given to
Subalakshmi who forced Vinoth into begging. His signature was
taken and he was taken to a hospital in Cuddapah in Andhra
Pradesh where an operation’ was performed to turn him into an
eunuch. He was then forced into prostitution. Finally, he
managed to flee and return to Chennai on March 11,” said Radha.
The five accused were booked under Sections 3 (1), 4 (1), 5
(1) and 6 of the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act and Sections
363 (A), 372, 373, 346, 326 of the Indian Penal Code read with
Section 120 (B) of IPC.
On Friday, while the arrested were being taken to a
magistrate’s court in Egmore some of their relatives and friends
stage a road roko’. The anchor of a private TV channel who came
to cover the incident was gheraoed by a group of lawyers and
transgenders.

Transsexual Gang Kidnaps Boys For Flesh Trade

CHENNAI, April 5 (Bernama) — Police in Tamil Nadu are working on
a theory that a transexual gang operating in south India is
luring young boys and forcing them to undergo sex change
operation and later engage them in prostitution.
Although initial details are sketchy, police in Chennai said
two such cases had surfaced recently, after a retired doctor was
arrested in Kadapa in Andra Pradesh yesterday, making them
believe a transgender gang is behind the heinous crime.
“We arrested the doctor from Kadapa and he admitted of
helping the transsexual group. He has done 40 to 50 operations
on boys to change their sex.
“We are also working on this angle, of a transgender gang
involved in luring young boys and forcing them to change their
sex and later lure them into prostitution to earn money,” Chennai
deputy inspector-general of police (crime investigation division)
S.N. Seshasai told Bernama today.
On Friday, Chennai police arrested the 75-year-old doctor,
wanted for castrating a 16-year-old by from Tamil Nadu last year,
suspected to be under the order of the gang who later kidnapped
the minor to Pune, where he was abused to beg and work as a
prostitute.
“The doctor had been doing this (surgery) for 17 years since
he retired. He said he does about two to three surgeries on boys
every year. He removes their male organs and turn them into a
female. He is on remand now,” added Seshasai.
The 16-year-old victim, who managed to escape from Pune and
returned to his family, is currently undergoing medical
treatment.
An estimated 30,000 transgender persons live in Tamil Nadu
and there are more than half a million of them across India.

CHENNAI: Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) police on Saturday arrested a
75-year-old doctor who had castrated a school dropout,
16-year-old Vinoth, in his hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Police
revealed the arrested person’s name as Naganna.
“We have verified his certificates. He is a genuine doctor
and had retired from medical service in 1995. Since then, he has
been running a private hospital (KMC) in Cuddapah, where his son
also works with him,” superintendent of police, CB-CID
(anti-trafficking wing) S Mallika said.
During interrogation Naganna admitted to having committed
the crime. “Naganna had collected Rs 4,000 to 5,000 from brokers
for conducting each castration. He was in the racket for the
past several years. We are now inquiring how many castrations he
had conducted. Special teams are still searching for a few more
who are absconding in the case,” a senior CB-CID officer said.
Vinoth of Kovalam was kidnapped by a group of transgenders.
After he was castrated, he was named Trisha and initiated into
the prostitution racket. Vinoth was finally rescued by an NGO.
Police had arrested six persons including three transgenders on
Friday.
The arrested doctor was remanded in judicial custody after
being produced before a magistrate’s court on Saturday.

Doctor from Kadapa held for castrating minor

CHENNAI: A special team of the Crime Branch CID police late on
Friday night arrested S. Naganna (75), the doctor who allegedly
castrated a minor boy from Tamil Nadu at Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh
last year.
The surgeon performed the operation in his hospital at the
behest of some transgenders, who had abducted the boy from
Kovalam in Kancheepuram district in July 2006. He was produced
in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
According to Superintendent of Police (CBCID) S. Mallikha,
the doctor confessed to having performed many sex change
operations in recent years. “Dr. Naganna used to perform at
least two such surgeries every year and charge about Rs.5,000 as
fee for each operation. In this case, he castrated a minor
without the consent of family members. He is a gold medallist
from the Kurnool Medical College and Hospital,” she told The
Hindu on Saturday.
Besides criminal conspiracy, the doctor has also been booked
under Section 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the IPC.
“He is a postgraduate in surgery and worked as a Surgical
Specialist at Kurnool General Hospital,” said Ms. Mallikha.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (CBCID) S.N. Seshasai
said the boy, who escaped from a flesh trade centre in Pune and
reached home a couple of weeks ago, was referred to a hospital
for a series of medical examinations.
“It is more than a year since his private parts were
forcibly removed. Preliminary tests have shown that he is
suffering from some urinary complications.”

Investigations reveal that Pune is emerging as a link
between an inter-state gang of transgenders who castrate young
boys and force them into prostitution.
This has come out after a team of Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) of Chennai police visited Pune last week and
arrested a 75-year-old surgeon, S Naganna, at Kadapa in Andhra
Pradesh, for allegedly castrating a 16-year-old boy from Tamil
Nadu at the behest of some transgenders. The boy had fled Pune
from his captors .
The police team, however, returned to Chennai without making
any arrest. The police say that transgenders had kidnapped the
minor boy from Kovalam in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu in
July 2006 and later forced him into the flesh trade in Pune’s red
light area.
The boy escaped and reached his home last month and is now
under treatment. He was found to have been castrated and is
reported to be suffering from urinary complications.
Chennai CID Deputy Superintendent of Police Baluswamy told
The Indian Express over phone, “Our team was looking for five
persons, mostly transgenders, in Pune involved in forcing the boy
into prostitution in Budhwar Peth area. So far, we have not
arrested anyone from Pune. Investigations are on to find if
there are more minor boys who have been castrated.”
Chennai police suspect that some transgenders in Pune are
part of the racket. Meanwhile, the police have booked Dr Naganna
for allegedly castrating the minor boy without his consent.
Police have also invoked Section 326 (voluntarily causing
grievous hurt) of Indian Penal Code against the surgeon.

Tejaswini Sevekari, a social activist working for uplift of
sex workers in the red light areas of Pune, said she was aware of
some transgenders willingly going to Chennai and Bangalore for
surgeries, but I have not come across any boy who had been forced
to forcibly castrated and pushed into the prostitution racket.
When contacted, the Faraskhana police said they were not
aware of the case.

CHENNAI: Crime Branch CID, the nodal agency for investigation of
human and child trafficking in the state, has directed the city
police commissioners and district superintendents of police to
investigate about the rackets working behind organised begging
using children. The recent case of Vinoth, a 16-year-old boy
from Kancheepuram, who was first forced into begging and later
subjected to castration before being pushed into prostitution by
a group of transgenders, has exposed an inter-state child
trafficking network.
“An inter-state gang is operating. Only because of the
courage of Vinoth’s mother we came to know about this case. It
was a revelation to us. Though steps have been taken to check
human trafficking, we’ve never come across such a network of
transgenders that forces young children to begging and sex-change
operation,” CB-CID additional director general of police Archana
Ramasundaram told reporters.
She said the parents of children who are subjected to any
form of cruelty should come forward and register complaints
directly with the CB-CID (044-22502510) or with the child
helpline (1098).
“We’ve asked the district police heads and city police
commissioners to investigate into the organised begging network.
In Vinoth’s case, he had to hand over the money that he earned
through begging to a woman at the end of each day. That shows
that it was an organised network. We could see so many children
begging on the streets in our state, and such networks could be
behind them,” the officer said.
CB-CID officials said the gang that kidnapped Vinoth and
forced him into begging and prostitution could have been
operating for a long time.
“We are now trying to take Dr Naganna, who did the sex-
change surgery on Vinoth. He had told our officials that he had
been doing sex change operation – two to three a year- since
1995. Information he provides would be vital in learning about
such networks,” she said.
Ramasundaram said in Vinoth’s case, there were 13 accused
hailing from three states, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil
Nadu. CB-CID has arrested seven accused including Dr Naganna.
Three of the accused have reportedly taken refuge in Dhamdere
Halle’, a red light area run by transgenders in Pune. CB-CID is
in constant touch with the Pune city police.

CHENNAI: Transgenders kidnap young boys, castrate them and induct
them into their group just to keep their exclusive community life
going.
Since they need the community, which alone supports them in
their old age, they need to nurture it by bringing in new
persons, said Archana Ramasundaram, ADGP of CB-CID, which
investigated the alleged forcible induction of a 16-year-old boy,
Vinoth, of Kancheepuram into a transgender group.
Unless efforts are made to bring transgenders into the
mainstream, they would continue to make a living through begging
and commercial sex and community life will remain an integral
part of their existence, she pointed out.
The special team that visited `Dhamdere Halle’ in Pune’s
Puthwarpet to arrest a transgender, Kaliselvi, involved in the
Vinoth case, and also to rescue other children, had an insight
into the life of transgenders, Ramasundaram told reporters on
Wednesday.
Anti-Trafficking Cell DSP, C Balusamy, who visited the
Dhamdere Halle, explained the life of transgenders there.
He said they operated in groups, each following a particular
avocation. Some made a living through commercial sex, while
others begged and some others formed a group that was involved in
dancing.
When the team went in search of another accused Kuttiamman
to Ahmed Nagar in Pune, news spread fast through their networks
and all the children were hidden somewhere, said Ramasundaram,
adding that police from three states – Maharashtra, Andhra
Pradesh and Karnataka – were helping the State police in
investigating the case.
The doctor, Naganna, who castrated Vinoth, was wanted in two
other similar cases in Bangalore. Even the Goa police wanted him
in a case, she said.

Five wanted transgenders surrender before court
Chennai, Apr 15 Five transgenders wanted in connection with an
inter-state human trafficking case surrendered before a city
court here today, taking the number of arrested and surrendered
transgenders in the case to 11.
CB-CID ADGP Archana Ramasundaram told PTI that the five
persons, wanted in connection with the case relating to
conducting transgender surgery on a teenager and forcing him into
prostitution, surrendered before a Magistrate court and were
remanded to 15 days judical custody.
They were later lodged in the Puzhal jail.
Earlier, six transgenders were arrested on charges of
forcing the victim Vinoth into prostitution in Pune, after a
trangender surgery was peformed on him by a retired civil
surgeon.
The surgeon, Dr Naganna, was arrested from Cuddapah district
in Andhra Pradesh last week for performing the operation.
Police officials of three states – Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh and Maharashtra were jointly carrying out probe in this

God made the Earth, Nature, Man Woman than God rested, now Man pretending to be an image of God was not too happy and being genetically politically inclined ..with the theory of Divide and Rule created the Hijra from his own Rib. with due apologies to the the story of our biblical creation.
The Hijra is neither Man nor Woman..Neither this nor that.. a line running parallel better sorrow and despair.
My father in law hates Hijras , I dont blame him, one of his relatives aspiring to be a Bollywood star , was in Mumbai a stunner ,great looks failed to make it in the Industry..he returned depressed was accosted bya Hijra began living with her, the hijras was over possessive..the good lookers family tried hard to get him out of the clutch of the hijra, but all moves were futile ..Hijra would not let go of her lover..I only know one thing , when the lover too wanted a release from this androgynous love trap, the HIjra had him killed.. there was no proof or evidence , in the police records I am told the case was closed ..the hijra moves around the streets of Uttar Pradesh.
Now this might be an individual stray case , but Hijras are human possess all the frailties of Man…his wickedness his lust his dreams hopes and aspirations.

I have never lived among Hijras just gathered by observing them through my inborn Sufi hindsight.. over 8000 pictures in about 5 years..but no coffee table book .. hijra poetry and their story their pain as seen on the viewfinder of my soul.
I have never been to the Eunuch festival at Koovagam Tmil Nadu the only festival that does not happen, .Idont stalk Hijras I wait for them and they fall into my laps.. metaphorically..
My wife understand my love for the Hijras and their community..but as a woman she thinks I shoul make money like other photographers who learnt under me and make almost Rs 10000 an assignment..that is her pain.

Peela House Red Light Area Mumbai Cages ..the story of the fallen women.
This is where she lives , this is the street of desire where she will live age and die. Everybody knows the address but nobody addresses their pain , the pain of the living dead. I have been shooting this area earlier through a moving cab as the denizens of this dark and dreary world do not want to be photographed. Most of them have been sold here and have broken ties with their lives and relatives because prostitution is a shameful profession ..which does not come within the parameters of dignity of labor. I made several trips, sometimes walking barefeet and shooting the pictures chased by the hardcore whores and their pimps..
However last year I met a sexy siren..a hijra transgender beauty called Heena ..we became friends and I began visiting her quite frequently..to shoot her living pain. Heena is very fond of me and a story goes that Heena was kidnapped from these cages by an aging Don now dead , but he let her go once he had the most of her. Heena calls the shots in this market of flesh..
On the day after Ashura she saw my bleeding head in the Rashtriya Sahara newspaper , she immediately called to inquire , pleaded me to visit her, I did.. Ours is a very exquisite platonic relationship, Heena supports my Hijra cause and loves my Hijra poetry..
Heena has her own apartment in a posh locality but she lives at the Cages..her Guru another person named Laxmi is a devout Hindu devotee of Durga Ma. Heena fasts during Ramzan, reads the Holy Scriptures and has helped the needy ..rehabilitated a lot of young kids who come here to Mumbai to join Bollywood and got trapped in the flesh trade .
Heena hIjda has made the most of her life even to this day there are offers for her hand but Heena is still waiting for her Prince Charming.. When I first met Heena , I was walking up the steps to shoot the Red Light area from a window of a retired prostitutes house on Peela House , she mistook me for a eunuch too..than we became friends when I mentioned her about my Guru Laxmi Narayan Tripathi.
Later both Heena Hijra and Laxmi Narayan Tripathi came together on Salman Khans show on TV.
This is my tribute to our friendship ..a story of a an endangered species called Hijras of Mumbai..Now Public.
